It was whilst at the Ri, creating some imagery for a furniture company’s funky new seating, we got talking to the centre manager of their new educational facility The L’Oreal Young Scientist Centre and starting discussing innovation, ideas and how abstract artwork could help decorate their new space, whilst reflecting their heritage in a modern way. The Royal Institution of Great Britain, based in Albermarle Street in Mayfair, London, UK, is an independent charity that has been in existence for over 200 years and is dedicated to connecting people with the world of science; it is also the venue for the famous televised annual “Ri Christmas Lectures” on science with a particular slant towards children’s education. Famous scientists such as Michael Faraday and Humphry Davy researched, discovered and innovated at the Ri.
By looking around at the iconic building and the artefacts on display we were able to create a series of photographs of key aspects, but in an interesting way as raw material for further digital artwork development.
The final chosen pieces were mounted on acrylic to complete the modern feel to the work and (2012) they continue to provide both interesting decoration for hundreds of children visiting the centre but also a thread of conversation back to the very important heritage stories that form the basis of the work still being done their today…
